CLASS 10: The Education Grid

I read about the Education Grid at  http://theeducationgrid.org/ this program allows classes to be held in a virtual world environment that is secure, and doesn't have public access.  So essentually they are "renting" a space in virtual world that only people in the class can access. This doesn't mean that the students can't explore the public areas of the virtual world they just have a place where the class is held. This ensures that children of all ages are safe, and the class is effective.  It is as close to a classroom setting as you can get.

These programs are available to people of all ages, including kinder gardeners! The teacher can choose whether or not the class learning space is public. Channels can also be created so that even if the class is in a public place they can only hear each other on that channel.

In this article they use second life as an example of a virtual world.  We use second life a lot in our class and there are lots of private worlds that we don't have access to.
